Artist’s Statement

In a play by Shakespeare there is a song that begins, "Tell me where is fancy bred/ In the heart or in the head?" My art, my fancy, springs from my heart. I don't paint flowers, for example, so much as my emotional responses to them. Flowers seem to have emotions of their own. Tumbling nasturtiums are like celebrants at a summer carnival; tulips dance with a kind of longing; cyclamen, grounded by their stems, cannot fly--I know those feelings well.

My painted people and creatures--crocodiles, cats, dogs and birds--wear their hearts on their sleeves, as do I. I want to paint love and the profound connection that we as humans have with each other and with all existence.
