Year round, I have a hunger for flowers. They are my sunshine, my soul food, so I buy them along with the groceries to feed my spirit. When I am painting or drawing flowers from life or photos I want to capture that energy, beauty and aliveness that I love so much.
Winter berries, Spring narcissus, tulips, and anemones, Summer grasses, nasturtiums, and sunflowers, zinnias from the roadside flower stand, garden roses, and farmers market bouquets on Hornby Island inspire me. And while the flowers I paint often seem to paint themselves, the still still life genre offers many compositional challenges. I am influenced by the impressionists, Matisse, Dufy and Van Gogh to name a few.
